What a wonderfull pastime, so easy to achive a desirable image, all you have to do is buy a camera then point and "shoot" ! Well if you believe that, you'll fall for any old rubbish, at the end of the day if you want to take a half decent photo, there are two hurdles to jump.

Firstly, read the camera's instruction manual, make sure you take it with you, then go off somewhere and practise till your blue in the face. Unless you get to grips with the basic controls, the image your looking for will be a long time coming. Try to understand what the controls and buttons do, shoot the same scene with different settings to see what comes out best, thats the only way to learn without lessons.

Secondly, be prepared! always carry a camera with you, you will never know when a photographic chance will come along, the times I've said " I wish I'd had my camera" but of course it was too late. Also be prepared to make sacrifices, you'll need to be up before sunrise, get a wet arse! have loads of patience, put up with freezing weather as well as walking for miles just to get a viewpoint.

If at this stage your now "not quite sure" if photography is the "thing" for you, then quit now before you spend a lot of money, (just look at other peoples image gallerys, it's much less painfull). However , if your after a challenge, then photography can be very rewarding, one of the best ways to start out is to join a local club. There are many hundreds around the country, if the club is anything like the one I'm involved with, you should pick up basic camera skills quite quickly. It should inspire you to take photographs that you may not have thought of, learn from other members, and win prizes in the club competions if your brave enough to enter,

Like music, Photography has many "genre's", you may find that you enjoy Landscape Photography more than Portrait, or Natural History better than Action, but rest assured, if you try them all, you will become a better photographer. You will understand the different techniques involved in getting the end results, and then be able to apply all this knowledge to your own style.

Remember this, a good photograph does not require the best equipment, it just requires an understanding of general photography, and how to apply that with the camera being used.

However, the best equipment will be expected to take good images, provided the photographer is competent enough!
